About 5C Cultural Center
History & Accomplishments
Founded in 1989 by three Lower East Side social activists, who still serve as board members, 5C Cultural Center (5CCC) was incorporated in 1996 as a not-for-profit. Its mission: to provide an innovative environment for education, activism and the performing arts. 501(c)(3) status was approved in 2000. Offering wholesome food was realized in 2003.
For more than twenty years, 5CCC has presented over 1,000 performing arts events covering music, spoken word and drama/theatre. We have tutored over 300 low-income students in Mathematics, Music, Spanish and English. Some participants have gone on to graduate from Yale, Columbia, and Stanford Universities, while others are pursuing their creative passions to become performing artists.
Current Programs
5CCC’s main programs include a variety of performing arts events. The majority of 5CCC’s programs operate out of our 50-seat venue that is viewed as a serene and friendly place.
Performing Arts: Great artists both known and unknown from the music and spoken word community perform. We pride ourselves in producing a variety of music including traditional jazz, experimental music and a wide range of spoken word entertainment.
Jazz History Series: This series is devoted to jazz appreciation. Drawing upon our collection of 10,000 out of print LP records, film footage, and personal experience, the series provides a vivid portrayal of this American art form.
